Carver’s Graduates...Where are they now
Carver Dance Company is an organization that allows its students to be able to maintain a successful life. We not only focus on the objectives of dance, but contain a curriculum that enables the students to become empowering for those who desire to follow in their footsteps. In the year of 2012; we are focusing on how dance has the ability to mold students’ minds; that will prepare them for their following years. Former officers and members of the Company have come back to tell their story and how George Washington Carver not only academically prepared them but socially. Carver’s preparation has caused our members to be able to explore more than just a society but other nations, gain knowledge through the process of diversity and social network, and utilize their skills to maintain a career that can help stabilize their lives.
Graduate of 2008 Daisy Aguilar came back to share her journey to success. After graduating from Carver High School she attended the University of Texas Women’s University already prepared to face the actuality that our world produces. As she discussed her success all ears were open. She recently just returned from studying in Spain for college. On her journey she stated that in the beginning it was hard to adjust to, but worth an opportunity. As her life began to evolve she was able to experience a life of diversity; new culture, environment, and people. She took this experience as a life lesson and something to value. As she articulated each of her words she slowly drew in each student emphasizing that they are just as capable of success as she is. Her return back home has allowed Carver Dance Students to be impacted and inspired. Allowing them to see that working hard is all that is need in order to see a road of opportunities ahead.
The surprises did not end there. Another former student stopped by; Danielle Washington. Danielle is a current student at the University of Texas San Antonio. Although she did not decide to major in dance she still had a passion that drove her to keep going. She said that dance was something that she could not easily let go. Therefore; she decided to audition for the San Antonio Spurs dance team. She took this opportunity to be able to have the ability to say that dance is something that she can still live. She expressed how taking this step was something new but something that she needed. Allowing the students of Carver Dance Company to hear those words was the enlightenment that they needed.
Dance is not just a course that they take, but to most it is the lives that they live. Dance is allowed each individual that has passed through those halls to embrace an immense character of dignity and pride. These characteristics have become them as they grow to be greater than the words they live.

“Don’t try to be perfect…learn something” Harrison Guy
On January 24, 2012 the Carver Dance Company was given a privilege to be viewed by an inspiring Houston based dance company; Urban Souls. Their institute focuses on the essential aspects of being able to inspire and provide experiences for communities; they selected George Washington Carver’s High School of Performing Arts to be a part of their movement.
As they were accompanied by Urban Souls artistic Director; Harrison Guy, they were enabled to illustrate their ability to dance and demonstrate their character of possibilities. This was an opportunity to express their desire to move and begin a journey of exposure. “Don’t try to be perfect…learn something,” these were the words that he carved into each girl’s mind giving them a sense of relief that it is better to try what we do not know than try to establish a new form that only defines one individual.
While teaching three phrases of precise, strong, and articulated movements the young ladies were not only being observed but being auditioned. This was a time that would be an influential movement of progression if they were chosen to have the pleasure to take a journey with Urban Souls. Through the process a member of the team discussed how Mr. Guy gave energy of positivity that encouraged her to let go and become comfortable in his presence. Two days following the audition eight members from the Carver Dance Company were selected to be a part of choreography that will be presented on February 11, 2012. The production of “Old Wounds: New Blood”.
As we are living through an age of historical events, it is our responsibility to inform those who are unaware of the sacrifice that has been done. We were looking for a reform of justice, and today we have it. Therefore, on February 11, 2012, “Old Wounds: New Blood”, will be honoring the Buffalo Soldiers. These were men who willing to participate within the U.S.’s conflicting battles as they faced severe inequality and manipulation. Although they were in a world of segregation they gained intense courage. Due to their aspiration they were no longer people of just color or despair but those of a positive motive. So with Urban Souls’ movement they are recognizing The Buffalo Soldiers as men of courage. Their piece will reflect life as we know it, using Black History Month as their cultural theme.
