Brooks, Kevin. THE ROAD OF THE DEAD.
Ruben Ford knows the exact moment when his older sister is murdered coming home from a friends house on the English moors. Thanks to his gypsy blood he has always been able to “connect to his family” he just never thought to be witness to his sister’s murder. The police are dragging their heels with the investigation, making it impossible to bring his sister home to bury her. His older brother and Ruben go off to find the truth to bring their sister home. The brothers uncover a land grabbing conspiracy that almost gets them killed.
At fourteen Ruben must face difficult challenges in the name of his family much like students today.
Pfeffer, Susan Beth. LIFE AS WE KNEW IT.
Probably my favorite book all summer. Miranda is at the end of her sophomore year, and has made summer plans and secret wishes all documented in her journal. She starts to document the major event going, a meteor is going to hit the moon. It is nothing scientist say, but when the actual event happens life as she knows it ends. Her mother scrambles for supplies and Miranda thinks she is crazy, but because of the quick thinking her family is safe for longer than most.
The book is a chronicle of the hard times Miranda’s family must face, and the hard decisions and lessons learned by her. I literally cried at the end of this novel. Look for the companion novel coming in the fall to the LMC.
Williams Chima, Cinda. THE WARRIOR HEIR.
Jack doesn’t know that he truly has a heart of stone. A stone implanted when he was born without one when he was just a baby that destined him to be a warrior for the continually fighting Weirlind. His story takes him across the pond to battle for a change in equality for his kind. The ironic twists that link the characters are interesting and keep the reader engaged.
The LMC now has THE WIZARD HEIR, and look for DRAGON HEIR in the fall.
Picoult, Jodi. MY SISTER’S KEEPER.
True heart wrenching tale of love. Anna Fitzgerald knows her purpose in life is to cure her sister. She has been engineered to do just that. What started out as a simple cord blood donation turns into a life long medical ordeal. Even though Anna has never been sick she has medical records as thick as a terminally ill person. The book begins when Anna has made a decision to have emancipation over her body. This would allow her to be able to make all of her medical decisions herself, mainly to elect not to have the biggest operation of them all, a ****** transplant that could save her sister Kate’s life. Using chapters from the family’s points of view we come to understand that Anna’s decision not only wrecks the family, but is wrecking her emotions also. We find that the suit is not her own, but the only attempt for Kate to decide how to control her death. I would recommend this book to parents that want the best for their children and to young adults facing sibling crisis. My Sister’s Keeper reminds us all that life is bigger than just us, and our best efforts are sometimes thwarted by life occurrences. Once you read this page turner check out Nineteen Minutes also by Jodi Picoult in the LMC.
Bondoux, Anne-Laure. THE KILLER’S TEARS.
Paolo Paloverdos lives at the rocky barren edge of the earth in Chile with his parents whose rocky isolated personalities have allowed him to grow up alone. Visitors came rarely, but when they did they were always given refreshment to send them on their journey until Angel Allegria ended their life. Paolo was spared and eventually the two form a bond that reforms both killer and child. When rich idle Luis comes Angel must fight to maintain his position and eventually makes unnecessary mistakes. The police eventually capture the killer, but cannot understand the depth of relationship between the two.
Not your average happy ending tale that is most books. THE KILLER’S TEARS allows reformation of a brutal killer while bringing love to a neglected boy. Translated from the original French and set in a remote part of a foreign country you would think that this would not be a typical good read for students, but it is. Everyone wants to be forgiven, loved and understood. As Angel’s thought process is revealed the reader can see that he is just as misunderstood as many people. A harder book to read for the average student, but I can see why it is on the BBYA list, because of the emotions it evokes.
