IB Senior Theatre

International Baccalaureate Theatre Program
The aims of the Eisenhower Theatre program are to help students to understand the joy, nature, and need of theatre in the present; to understand it through practical experience as well as its historical context; to understand a variety of cultures other than their own, and how globally they are connected. The Eisenhower IB Theatre student after completion of the Standard level (SL) or Higher level(HL) courses will be expected to demonstrate:

. an ability to perform before an audience, and portray believable characters when
applying acting concepts, skills and techniques.

. an understanding of the relationship of theatre to history, global society and culture.

. an understanding of design, directing, and theatre production concepts and skills.

. an ability to respond to and evaluate theatre and theatrical performances.
Topics:
PERFORMANCE SKILLS
All students must perform in at least two productions per semester of which one must be major (Example: musical, multiple act productions, etc.) and one minor (Example: skits, assemblies, touring shows, etc.). AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

A. Students will be able to identify and analyze at least two different theatrical conventions and practices.
B. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of theatre practices throughout the world.

In this part of the IB Theatre program, the external assessment will be based on research and practical exploration. The candidate will be asked to creatively imagine that he or she has been asked by an actor, director, or designer to contribute, through research, to the production of a particular play or theatrical piece that will be performed in a particular place at a particular time. Assessment will be based on student’s portfolio and performance skills.
PLAY ANALYSIS
Externally assessed in an oral presentation, the student will apply design, directing, and theatre production concepts and skills from a director’s perspective.

from the International Baccalaureate prescribed list. Students are not expected to direct
an entire production of a text, but they will be encouraged to direct at least a scene.
Students will record on audio cassette their idea for staging the product prescribed by the
IBO. This will be sent to an external examiner appointed by the IBO. The student-director
will need sufficient practice with play scripts before the application process takes place.
HL presentations should last at least 20-30 minutes and SL should last 15-20 minutes.
Creativity should be explored and of high importance along with elements of clear
directing skills.
THEATRE PRODUCTION
Eisenhower IB Theatre students’ work will be internally assessed by the teacher.
This based on parts 1 and 4 of the program listed. HL and SL students will be involved
in one major and one minor production per semester.
In this part of the program, students will be allowed to explore all aspects of theatre
that go into creating a theatrical production. They will be able to select one or more areas
of theatre production, demonstrating responsibility, artistic discipline, and creative
problem solving.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT (HL only)
Students will keep a journal for this program. The individual project provides an opportunity
for a student taking Theatre Arts at Higher Level to pursue an independent interest, inquiry,
or passion that may have arisen during the course. It must not be a duplication of work
undertaken for other components of the program.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The students will develop:

THE PORTFOLIO
The portfolio will be a selective record of the candidates learning in the course of their theatre study at Eisenhower High School. It should show their journey in Theatre Arts, and should indicate milestones, turning points and crossroads of the entire experience. The portfolio should show backward steps as well as steps forward towards progress. It is created from journals, written or picture, charting development, growing knowledge, and understanding. It is a selective record of the student’s learning. Emphasis will be on the following course studies:
• Performance Skills
• World Theatre Studies
• Theatre Production

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

A. The student will acquire personal reflection skills and an understanding of how the various parts of theatre work together as a whole.
B. Acquire an understanding of the inner-workings of theatrical productions.

The portfolio will be taken from the journal entries, but should not be a scrapbook nor just a listing of events for the theatre season. It should be a straightforward look at the student’s work done during the course. The focus will be on the student’s response to his or work.
