In Ms. Hall's own words...
I have always known that I would be a teacher because there were so many teachers in my family. There was my grandmother, my mother, three aunts, two uncles, a cousin, and, next school year, my daughter will join the tradition. I know that teaching is not considered an inherited trait, but I feel that it is. Growing up I was extremely shy, and some people thought I would not be able to teach. Yet the fear I had of public speaking has never been an issue in my classroom because I am not concerned with me, only with what I can do for and give to my students (my children).
The greatest accomplishment that I have in education is getting my students and parents to understand that given the right guidance, all students can learn mathematics and in the process, learn to learn. Therefore, this has led me to have a higher success rate with students who normally are ineffective in mathematics. My students know my expectations are high and that if they do not meet them, I will call their parents, and we will remedy the situation as a team.
One of the rewards I find in teaching is reaching that child that felt and believed in their heart he or she would not ever understand mathematics. To see the light come on in their eyes once they comprehend the concept does so much for me. Another reward I receive is the relationships that I cultivate. I have students come back to visit me -- just because they love me.
