They learn to read and write short words and phrases. Time is spent reading and writing every day. They also work on a variety of math skills including simple addition and subtraction. During the school year every kindergarten class goes on a field trip. At the end of the year we have a special Kindergarten Graduation Ceremony. It is a special day we look forward to all year long. The teachers in kindergarten feel it is very important for every parent to be involved in their child's education. We welcome parent volunteers and helpers in our school at all times. Welcome to First Grade
First grade is an exciting time for students. First graders learn many new skills that are very important. In reading, we review the letters and sounds in order to become independent readers. Independent readers can understand what they read and answer comprehension questions. In writing, we begin by writing words, then sentences and last writing stories independently. In math, we work on recognition of numbers and use the Touch Point Math System with numbers up to nine. Our Math Program is a great program that makes learning math fun and exciting. Some skills we learn are addition and subtraction facts up to 20, graphing, time (hour and half hour), and money (penny, nickel, dime). Each year we go on a field trip, participate in sports day and many other exciting activities. In order to be a successful first grader good attendance and good behavior are very important. The first grade teachers of Black Elementary welcome all first graders and their parents to our school.
